A Sister’s Sitdown With Her Graduating Big Brother

“My favorite tradition was the pond jump. It was gross, but I would have to say that it was my favorite."

College is definitely a weird adjustment for both the family and the student going. For me, it is going to be a lot different next year because my only sibling is going off to college. Someone I have lived with for my entire life is now going to be living in a different state than me.

What’s especially hard is that my brother and I have definitely grown closer the older we got. We have matured more and do not get in the stupid little fights that siblings get in anymore.

Hank is going to Auburn and, like any boy going off to college, would say that he is very excited about having new experiences. He is also very excited “about rush and everything that goes in with that.’

But he is definitely going to miss certain things about home. When I asked what he would miss, he at first said, “That’s a really hard question.” But then he said, “Definitely the family.”

Since he is only going to be about two hours away from us he thinks that “it is going to be weird without y’all but after an adjustment period I think I will be okay.” Thankfully, most of his high school friends are also going to Auburn. He told me that the ones who are going to different colleges “have agreed that I will go visit them for some of their game days and they will come to mine.”

One friend in particular, who he has been close with since they were little, is going to a different school so they have definitely talked the most about visiting each other. “[He] is not going to school with a big football team so he’s going to come down a lot on weekends and visit whenever he wants to,” Hank told me.

Hank has enjoyed many of the senior privileges and senior events. “My favorite tradition was the pond jump. It was gross, but I would have to say that it was my favorite,” he said. But, on the sweeter side, he thought that “Senior chapel was great, it was really weird seeing all of my teachers from the past 5 years…it was just sweet and awesome at the same time.”

He also appreciated “all of the non-uniform days towards the end of the year.”

Since he’s leaving, I figured I’d ask my big brother for some advice, and one of the first things he said was to try new classes. “The school is great about giving you options and experiences that might be really different so I would just say take as many of those as you can,” he said. One of his favorite classes was ethical leadership because “it was different than any one I have taken before.”

One of many things that Hank will miss about Lovett is how close he has grown with his peers, something “I am going to now have to build with new peers for the next four years,” he told me.

Overall, It is definitely going to be weird for me to be an only child but I can’t wait to visit for game days and I know that he is going to love Auburn!
