Mary Grace Brown is an enthusiastic freshman with a passion for theater. She came to Lovett as an eighth grader and is hopeful for a great start to high school. So far, she has enjoyed her classes, especially Honors Singers.
In fact, she had Honors Singers earlier that morning. ”We are singing the national anthem at the Battle of Buckhead, so everybody should pull up!” she said.
But her passion for singing goes beyond school, as she attends a theater camp every summer. “Over the summer, I went to Stagedoor Manor. It’s in upstate New York, and I was there for three weeks,” she said. “I learned a bunch and worked with incredible artists. I was also a dancer in Pippin, and I had a blast!”
Now that we’re back, she’s excited to do the fall play, winter musical, and tech for the spring. “The best part about theater is you can go on stage and perform and not care what anyone else is thinking,” she said.
Theater has always been a way for her to express herself. “I get to step out of my own worries and become the character I’m embodying; it makes me forget what else is going on in my life,” she remarked.
One of those characters she’s most enjoyed embodying is Maisie, from Seussical the Musical, she said.
Besides being in the theater, some may know her as the chaplain’s daughter. When asked how she felt about this, she said she has loved seeing her dad at school, so she doesn’t mind it.
“The stereotype is definitely funny because people expect me to be a lot different than I am,” she explained. I asked her if there were any perks or downsides to being the chaplain’s kid, and she said she can grab coffee from his office whenever, which is a great perk!
The only downside, in her opinion, is seeing him get up in front of the entire school every chapel day. “One time, he held hands and swayed with Mr. Anderson for ten minutes. It was very embarrassing,” she shared.
Still, she greatly enjoyed traveling with her dad and family in France in July. Paris was the highlight of MG’s summer. “My Paris trip was a solid ten,” she exclaimed, especially since it was her first time outside of the country.
I asked her what the best food she ate in Paris was, and she told me it was burrata, an Italian cheese. I was surprised she didn’t say a croissant, but since burrata is her new favorite, I might have to give what the Proudly Cheese Wisconsin website describes as “the soft, delicate pouch of dairy-filled deliciousness” a try.
From a prestigious theater camp to traveling across the world to Paris, MG undoubtedly enjoyed her summer. Now back on the bank, she has plenty to look forward to this school year!
