If laughter is the foundation of a connection, James Black and Ava Boren are on solid ground. Throughout the twenty minutes that I spent talking with them, they probably laughed for half of it. It’s safe to say that I felt like a third wheel throughout the entire interview.
James and Ava have been dating for two months now, which is practically a lifetime for two high school freshmen. James and Ava were friends in middle school but didn’t get closer until this year. James said that they started to facetime and talk more and that eventually kickstarted their relationship.
I asked the couple what their Valentine’s Day plans were: a special surprise date planned by James. The two reminisced about their previous dates. Their very first outing together was a movie date. “We went to see ‘Smile,’ James explained, explaining the movie scared the crap out of him. Perhaps the fear brought them closer together. They both agreed that their favorite date was when they went ice skating. “It was so fun. We got to know each other better,” says Ava.
I asked the couple what they liked most about each other. Ava replied, “His eyes, his sincerity, sense of humor, smile, and his hair.” (Presumably, the smile isn’t like the one in the movie.) James said his favorite things about Ava were, “by far her eyes- that was the first big compliment I gave her. Also, just her face in general, she’s the sweetest person ever, she got me a gift when I had a concussion, and she’s pretty funny, really caring, and all the above.” The two exchanged laughs and smiles after he said that. Again, not the creepy kind.
Then, James and Ava talked about their pet peeves or “icks” for each other. Ava laughed and turned to James saying, “You resolved my pet peeve.” James explained that “the pet peeve was that I’d always act like I was about to tell her something important and then I’d say, ‘actually never mind’ and she would get mad at me.” They didn’t have many pet peeves about each other, but there was a pet peeve about their relationship in general. “Neither of us can drive,” Ava said. “And we only have one class together,” James added.
James and Ava said that they facetime almost every night, and text constantly. “This is the best relationship I’ve ever been in,” Ava happily said, indicating that her past relationships were “trash” in comparison.
Keep on laughing, James and Ava!
