Five Minutes With…AP Gov Girl, Jane Mullin

“The two moments that have made senior year feel real were fall break and the last football game."

Since last year, I had a five-minute conversation with Jane Mullin, I thought that it was only right to find out how her senior year has been going so far. With Jane being one of my best friends, I walked right up to her at lunch in the cafe and we immediately jumped into a conversation.

She had just come from a pre-calc test and was definitely ready to relax and hang out with her friends in the cafe. It was a chapel day so everyone around us was dressed in their chapel attire, and she was definitely in the mood to get her mind off of her prior test.

When we started to dive deep into questions about this year compared to last, she immediately said “it has been more stressful due to college applications on top of normal school work.” On the flip side of things, she thinks, “It is going by way too fast and has been the most bittersweet year yet.”

She’s also in limbo when it comes to knowing where she’ll be next year. She’s submitted everything and is now waiting to hear back from different colleges.

Jane has loved all of her classes, but one has definitely stuck out the most: AP Gov. “Usually I hate history but I liked this class a lot more than I thought I would because it was so useful and interesting plus I love Mr. Douglas as a teacher,” she says.

For all seniors, they’re facing a lot of “lasts.”

“The two moments that have made senior year feel real were fall break and the last football game,” she says.

Fall break was very special because she said it was one of the last times that all of us would be on a trip together before senior spring break. She also said that it was a great bonding moment for everyone and that Kiawah was the perfect place for everyone to hang out. “Not only was the weather amazing but it was one of the calmest and prettiest places to spend any break and I wish that we had gone here the past couple of years,” she says.

During the last football game, she said that it became really real that everyone was starting to end sports that [some] will never play again, so with all of the tears from coaches, players, fans, and families it made it surreal that this was our last year together.

Along with bittersweet moments, Jane just celebrated her eighteenth birthday this past weekend with her family and friends. “I started off my morning with pilates with my mom and then I went to lunch with my family,” she says. She then told me that she and her mom love to go to Pilates every now and then and follow it with lunch.

Looking forward to winter break, she and her family will be heading to North Carolina to visit her cousins after Christmas. Her cousins came to Atlanta for Thanksgiving so she said it was “their turn” to go see them. Their families are very close so she is super excited to be able to see them for these two holidays back-to-back.

When she’s chilling out, she likes to watch  Friends [she always has] and listen to Mac Miller [her favorite artist right now].

Looking into next semester, she cannot wait to celebrate the rest of the senior events and spend breaks with her friends and family.
