Frosh Reps Seek To “Make A Positive Impact”

Her main goal this year is to “be a voice for all.”

When student council representative Lauren Nelson found out she had been elected, she was playing with her new puppy, Norman. “I came inside, and then the email came,” she said. “I think I probably had 15 people text me. Then I checked for myself—and I was very happy.”

In contrast, Vice Representative Matthew Fornasiero had a much calmer reaction. Matthew described the moment in a more laid-back tone and attitude, simply stating that he was “overjoyed.”

But for Lauren and Matthew, being elected was just one part of the story. They’re motivated to fulfill the desires that drove them to run for the positions in the first place.

“I finally wanted to have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the community,” Matthew said.

Matthew’s campaign focused on going around the school and discussing with his classmates about their opinions and hopes for this year’s SGA. These requests helped Matthew create his campaign video.

As for Lauren, she created a flyer that she posted on Instagram and made a creative campaign video that was 100% convincing with a fun twist.

Now that he’s been elected, he not only wants to make new additions to Lovett but also ensure everyone feels included and heard during his term.

And he’s not the only one with big plans; Lauren also shared a clear vision for what she hopes to accomplish this year. She’d like to add more Yondr pouch unlocking stations on each floor to make it more convenient for students.

While both were hoping to plan a homecoming dance, Lauren now wants to bring a winter formal to Lovett, aiming to give students a memorable night, but with a seasonal twist.

Lauren explained that her main goal this year is to “be a voice for all” and be someone that people can trust and feel comfortable coming to when they have any thoughts or concerns. Matthew hopes he can “make sure everyone has a voice and they enjoy their high school experience”.

Matthew and Lauren want students to feel comfortable walking up to them, sharing an idea, or just saying hi.

Aside from SGA, this power duo has pretty busy lives outside of SGA. Lauren told me about her old YouTube hannel, which was the start of her public speaking journey. Outside of school, her main hobbies are volleyball and hanging out with friends.

Matthew plays soccer and loves watching football.

I wondered how they would describe themselves with three words. Matthew knew his answer immediately: “Curious, funny, and intelligent.” Lauren, on the other hand, hesitated to find the perfect words and eventually came up with welcoming, nice, and a person to rely on.

So watch out, 9th grade – Lauren and Matthew are bringing the blast, ready to lead and make it last!
