SGA Candidate: Mary Camp Newton

“I truly care about people.”

By Alexis Dalton

Mary Camp Newton believes you should elect her for SGA President because she can connect with everyone. “I’ve been involved in a lot, so I know every perspective,” the three-year varsity soccer player (and State Champion) and two-year LERIG club member told me. “I truly care about people.”

Mary Camp hasn’t run for SGA before, but after seeing the success of Michael Cohen, Wesley Caldwell, and Charlotte Stukes, she’s realized that she too wants to make an impact in the Lovett community. “I want to be the voice and face for all the people at our school because I can relate to everyone,” she explained. “I can bring everyone’s voice forward.”

Her role model is none other than her mom, Elizabeth Newton. “She’s a bad**s business women,” she proudly noted. Mary Camp has learned essential leadership and communication skills from her mom, whether it’s through working at her office or learning everyday life lessons.

If Mary Camp had one hour of freetime away from her rigorous student-athlete schedule, she would hang out with her friends or siblings. “We are very family oriented,” she added.

One of her main goals with her presidency would be to improve people’s willingness to celebrate each other. “We have such a strong culture of celebrating athletics, fine arts, whatever it is, and I want to continue that culture and bring everyone to light.” She paused, then said: “Everyone has something that they can give.”

Mary Camp has noticed that a lot of people are constantly complaining. She wants any problems that the student body has to be “brought to the table” so that changes can be made. She wants everyone’s voices to be not only heard, but listened to.

A dream goal of Mary Camp’s is to eliminate cliques. “This obviously would be farfetched, but I’ve seen how great it is to surround yourself with different people from different groups,” she said.

Before Mary Camp went back to studying in the first floor alcove, she encouraged me (and anyone reading this) to “Be a champ and vote for Camp!”
