Sophomore SGA Works To Meet Needs

“We want to help bring all of the Lovett community together."

As our 10th grade Student Government Association is nearing the end of the first semester, it felt like it was time to do a check-in, regarding their goals and accomplishments.

Aydin Aly Ajani was elected president in the election that took place at the end of last year. As many students wonder “what do they even do,” it felt necessary to ask. Aydin explained how they “have meetings every Friday, so it has been really productive.” The hardest part, according to Rohan Shrivastava, 10th grade Secretary/Treasurer, is “making sure that I see all of the needs and advocating for them.”

Recently, the SGA finished up the homecoming parades, which was a whole SGA effort. They had to narrow in on every aspect of the parade as well as prepare for the powderpuff games by making shirts.

They also planned NUDs for the Upper School. Within these NUDs, they also planned friendly competitions for the students to participate in. For instance, there was an Anything But A BackPack NUD and a competition to see who had the craziest backpack.

Now, the SGA is looking towards exams to help with the incoming stress. “We’re staying focused on the mental health of the school,” Aydin explained. They’ve all been working together to make ideas to help the students in order to lower stress levels. The Sophomore SGA’s job is to also plan Winterfest, so they’re working on that too.

During their meetings, SGA members not only talk about their plans for the Upper School, but also bring in the Lower and Middle Schools into their conversations. For example, they are thinking about putting up lights around the school in honor of the upcoming holidays. “We want to help bring all of the Lovett community together,” Aydin said.

For Rohan, being in a different position has made this year and last year seem a little different, but he still sees the overall role as the same. “We all help towards the same goals,” he explained. He does want to stay in SGA next year, so he is thinking about running for president again. “It’s something that I enjoy doing, and I think I’ll make a difference,” he told me.

As we all remember, one of the things that Rohan did last year was create ping pong and cornhole tournaments, which are still played in the plaza.

“I feel really proud because at first, I thought it wasn’t going to do anything, but then I saw everyone have a lot of fun!” he said.
